The bodies of four al-Shabaab prisoners were found outside the city of Beled Hawo in Somalia's southwestern region of Gedo on Monday, officials said.

Bille Ibrahim, the head of security forces in Beled Hawo, told the media on Monday that the prisoners had been taken out of their cell by soldiers late on Sunday night before they were killed.

"Security forces have killed four teenage al-Shabaab prisoners who were behind the killing of a tribal elder," Ibrahim said.

"They confessed that they had killed the elder and two senior security officials in the city," he added.

Human rights defenders in East Africa condemned the incident.

Hassan Shire, executive director for the East and horn of African human rights defenders based in Uganda (EHAHRDP), told local media: "This incident is a shock and a violation against human rights. The Somali government must investigate [it] immediately."

Beled Hawo is located near the Kenyan border.
