A number of Nigerian soldiers were described as “missing in action” following a Boko Haram attack on their position near the Niger border, an army spokesman said late on Tuesday.

The soldiers had been in Gashigar, Sani Usman said, and confirmed that 13 had been injured while an unconfirmed number remained missing.

Usman said troops were withdrawn from the area following the attack while the injured soldiers were treated.

A faction of Boko Haram allied to Daesh said on Monday it killed at least 20 Nigerian and Nigerien soldiers in Gashigar. Usman did not confirm if any soldiers had died in the incident.
