Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index closed the day down 0.34 percent at 111.894,54 points with a trade volume of 7.8 billion Turkish liras ($2.01 billion) on Wednesday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 377.32 points, compared with 112.271,86 points at Tuesday's close.

The banking sector index fell 1.27 percent while the holding sector index gained 1.23 percent.

Among all sectors, the metalware machine sector index was the top performer with 1.79 percent. The tourism sector index suffered the biggest drop, losing 2.49 percent.

ICBC Turkey Bank's stocks performed the best, going up 12.59 percent while Ulker Biscuits saw the largest decline of the day, as its stocks dropped 4.83 percent.

Five stocks with the highest trade volume were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THYAO), defense company Aselsan (ASELS), Karabuk Kardemir (KRDMD), private lender Garanti (GARAN) followed by Karsan Automotive (KARSN).

The BIST Gold Exchange index went up 0.39 percent, while one kilogram gold traded at 160,000 Turkish liras ($41.459) as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT), up from Tuesday's closing price of 157,000 Turkish liras ($40,621).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate increased to 3.8760 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Wednesday, compared with 3.8630 at Tuesday's close.

On the third day of the week, the EUR/TRY rate also rose to 4.4960 by market close while one euro traded for 4.4690 liras at the close on Tuesday.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) Wednesday, the price of Brent oil was $63.28 per barrel, compared with Tuesday's close at $63.76.
