Turkish stocks up nearly 1 percent at close

BIST 100 index goes up 0.99 percent at Monday's close, increasing by over 1,000 points from Friday's close

Turkish stocks up nearly 1 percent at close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index climbed by 0.99 percent to close at 110,687.74 points on Monday with a 6.1 billion Turkish lira ($1.5 billion) trade volume.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 1,083.73-point hike from Friday's close of 109,604.01 points. It opened the first business day of the week at 109,860.89 points. 

During trading hours, the benchmark index hovered between 109,850.80 points and 111,115.77 points, while 81 stocks on the index were on the rise, 13 on the decline, and six were flat compared with the previous close. The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was 689.9 billion Turkish liras ($169.2 billion) at Monday's close. 

The banking and holding sector indices were up by 0.97 and 0.36 percent, respectively. Among all sectors, the BIST transportation index was the top gainer -- up 4.34 percent -- and the BIST mining index recorded the worst performance, flat with a 0.02 percent down.

Shares of leading polyester producer Sasa Polyester (SASA) were the best performer with an 11.97 percent rise, while stocks of Kipa Ticaret (KIPA), operating supermarkets, fell by 2.67 percent -- the biggest drop of the day. 

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, lenders Garanti and Halkbank, followed by Sasa Polyester and gold miner Koza Altin.

The USD/TRY exchange stood at 4.1050 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT) Monday, compared with its previous close of 4.0970. 

The euro/lira exchange rate was 5.0860 by market close -- up from 5.0520 at Friday's close -- and one British pound traded for 5.8960 Turkish liras while the GBP/TRY rate was 5.8550 at the previous close.  

The BIST Gold Exchange index advanced by 0.37 percent at the daily close. In the Precious Metals and Diamond Markets of Borsa Istanbul, one ounce of gold traded for $1,340.00 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Monday, up from $1,335.10 at Friday's close. 

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $71.81 per barrel -- hovering between $71.12 and $72.28 during the day -- climbing from around $66 at the beginning of this year.
