Borusan EnBW Energy AS aims to invest around $500 million in the next three to four years after winning 396 megawatts (MW) of wind energy pre-license capacity during Turkish Electrical Transmission Company’ tenders in December, the company's CEO said on Wednesday
Turkey awarded pre-licenses for wind energy projects with a total capacity of 2,130 megawatts during a five-day-marathon tendering period in late December 2017.
In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency, Mehmet Acarla, general manager of Borusan EnBW Energy AS, said that thanks to additional pre-licenses that the company won, the company’s renewable energy portfolio has now reached 1,200 MW in total.
Acarla said that with the newly finalized pre-licenses tenders, Borusan EnBW plans to construct and operate 10 additional projects with a total of 396 megawatts.
He also stated that the company’s momentum and success would play a vital role for the strengthening of Turkey’s economy.
The company will build wind facilities in various regions in Turkey including Edirne, Tekirdag, Sivas, Hatay, Karaman-Mersin, Afyon, Manisa and Malatya.
Acarla said that in alignment with the company’s future vision, the company would focus on Turkey's Renewable Energy Resource Zone Project (YEKA) announcement for the second tender round for wind and solar energy projects.
- New trend: low tender offers
Based on his experience in the industry and on the pre-licenses tenders in Turkey in June and December last year, Acarla argued that a new trend has developed not only in Turkey but in Europe and the U.S. with companies offering very low or ‘negative’ prices for tenders in the renewables sector.
He explained that this trend has arisen because of the decreased and more competitive cost of wind energy equipment and installations, as well as increasing efficiency, which has forced investors to offer low or negative tender bids.
And this is now offered without any monetary incentive schemes, he said.
“Renewable energy without financial incentives is the ‘new normal’,” he concluded.
