French President Emmanuel Macron has lodged a complaint against a photographer for "harassment and attempted invasion of privacy" while holidaying with his wife Brigitte in the southern port city of Marseille, local media reported on Tuesday.

French daily Le Figaro, quoted a presidential spokeswoman saying that a photojournalist had repeatedly followed the couple on his motorbike and ignored requests from Macron's security team to stop.

On Sunday, the photographer "intruded on the private property" of the presidential couple "which led to [the] filing a complaint".

French celebrity magazine VSD said the photographer had been detained for six hours by police before being released.

This is the first holiday for the newly elected French leader, since he took office last May.
