LONDON

The famous illuminated billboards of London’s Piccadilly Circus have gone dark until autumn 2017 due to renovation work.

The six enormous panels which lit up the U.K. capital’s iconic Piccadilly Circus have been switched off for the first time since the Second World War, aside from special events.

A single giant screen will replace the existing display.

Live broadcasts, weather reports and advertisement will be carried by the new display but until then it will be covered with non-digital banners.

Aside from the Second World War shutdown, the screens were switched off during the 1997 funeral of Princess Diana and that of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965.

It is estimated that around 100 million people a year pass through Piccadilly Circus, one of London's top tourist attractions.
