Spain saw its second fatal military plane crash in week when a pilot died as an F-18 fighter crashed shortly after takeoff in Madrid on Tuesday.

Spain's defense ministry said the plane crashed in Torrejon Air Base on the eastern outskirts of the capital.

The crash is being investigated, but the cause remains unknown.

Another jet fighter belonging to the Spanish military crashed last Thursday after an air display to mark the country's national day. The defense ministry confirmed the Eurofighter went down in Albacete, southern Spain, on its return to base.

The ministry said the pilot died in the accident which happened during a landing maneuver.
