Azerbaijan’s state news agency AzerTac Friday assumed the presidencies of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) and the World Congress of News Agencies (NAWC) for three years.

It took the reins at OANA's 16th general assembly and the fifth congress of the NAWC at the Haydar Aliyev Cultural Center in Azerbaijan's capital Baku.

Anadolu Agency was represented by its Deputy Director-General Mustafa Ozkaya at the event, which 80 representatives of 40 different news agencies attended.

Russia’s state-run TASS news agency, which had the presidency in 2013-2016, was elected OANA’s vice president.

Anadolu Agency held the presidency in 2010-2013.

‘We need Anadolu Agency’s cooperation’

Aslan Aslanov, AzerTac’s director general, told Anadolu Agency that they will work to improve OANA, including its website.

“We will pay attention to every single agency in our presidency. We will work to establish mutually beneficial cooperation, and also to improve experience-sharing between the agencies," he said.

Pointing to the friendship and fellowship between Turkey and Azerbaijan, Aslanov said: "I am sure that we will maintain our cooperation both in NAWAC and OANA. We need Anadolu, and Anadolu needs us."

Saban Kizildag, the deputy chair of Anadolu’s Executive Board, stressed the bias of Western media coverage of Palestine, Iraq, and Syria.

"We also underlined that free reporting and valuing all of humanity are today's most important issues," said Kizilday.

He added: "As a fellow friendly country, we always stand by Azerbaijan."

Established in 1961 under a UNESCO initiative, OANA is made up of 44 Asia-Pacific news agencies from 35 countries.
