Over 50 people, out of 400 attending a science conference in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, have reportedly contracted cholera.

Nairobi county health official Bernard Muia confirmed to Kenya’s Standard Newspaper on Thursday that guests at the three-day conference -- which is currently underway at the Weston Hotel in Nairobi -- had started showing cholera-like symptoms.

"Those affected have already been admitted to the hospital. We are not sure whether it is indeed cholera but we are still investigating," Muia told the Standard Newspaper.

"We suspect that those infected had consumed water that was not clean or are suffering from food poisoning," he added.

Muia said that 10 of those admittes were in critically condition. Most of the affected are doctors who were attending the fourth international scientific lung health conference 2017”, which is scheduled to end on Friday.

in May, three people attending a funeral in Nairobi died after contracting cholera at the event.
