More than 60 injured Kurdish peshmergas were sent to Turkey from Iraq to receive medical treatment in six hospitals in Ankara on Friday, a hospital source told Anadolu Agency.

Speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, the source said 62 peshmergas were wounded in clashes with Daesh terrorist group in Iraq. They were later carried by plane to Ankara Esenboga Airport and taken to the different hospitals in the Turkish capital, sources added.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since mid-2014, when Daesh captured the northern city of Mosul and overran large swathes of territory in the northern and western parts of the country.

According to the UN, more than 3.4 million people are now displaced in Iraq -- more than half of them children -- while more than 10 million are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.
