Turkish aid agency “Sadakatasi” has distributed food and water supplies to thousands of families in the drought-stricken nation of Somalia, the Istanbul-based agency announced on Wednesday.

Over 2,000 families in the country’s Baidoa district in the southern Bay region were given water aid, the Istanbul-based agency said in a written statement.

“We’ve provided clean water to 2,400 families who were suffering, and handed over three water tankers,” Cevdet Hasbal, a board member of the association, said in a statement.

The aid agency also provided food to over 1,000 families.

In late February, Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo declared the drought in his country as a national disaster and urged the international community to help his people.

The drought hit at least 11 regions, including Bay and Bakol, where at least 110 people died of hunger and waterborne diseases over 48 hours in March.
