The U.K. prime minister has said on Friday in Brussels that Britain would continue to play a “full and active role in the EU" until it leaves the bloc.

Meeting with the EU leaders on Friday, Theresa May has said she wanted a “mature” and “cooperative” relationship with EU partners and underlined that there could be "difficult moments" in the negotiations ahead.

“Yes, we will be leaving EU,” she said speaking after the summit. “As long as we are members of the European Union, we will continue to meet our rights and obligations.”

This was Theresa May’s first EU summit in Brussels since she replaced David Cameron as prime minister after the historic referendum allowing for a U.K. Brexit.

May also said the EU leaders had discussed Russia’s actions in Syria, saying they had agreed to "consider all options" should "atrocities” continue.

May also met European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for a working lunch.

EU leaders came together in Brussels in Thursday for a two-day summit.
