Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip on Sunday for the fifth day running.

"The Egyptian side notified us that the Rafah crossing would be closed at both directions for the fifth consecutive day," the Gaza Interior Ministry said in a press release, a copy of which was obtained by the Anadolu Agency.

Egyptian authorities have not given a specific date for re-opening the terminal, it added.

Egypt closed Rafah border crossing on Wednesday following an attack on a military intelligence headquarters in Rafah city killed six army personnel.

The crossing represents Gaza's only gateway to the outside world, as all other entry points to the coastal enclave remain blocked by Israel.

Egypt has been in turmoil since the military ousted Mohamed Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president, on July 3 following mass demonstrations against his presidency.

Ever since, northern Sinai has seen almost daily attacks by unknown gunmen.

Last month, 25 police officers were killed in the region in an attack by suspected militants.
