More than 155,000 Greek social democrats voted Sunday to elect Fofi Gennimata, president of a new Unified Central – left Carrier.

She is also the current president of PASOK, the most prominent center-left Greek party. This was the final round for the internal election for the presidency of the new political player.

Genimata, 52, managed to gain 57 percent of the votes. She ran against Nikos Androulakis, 38, a member of the European Parliament and of the Central Political Council of PASOK. Mr. Androulakis received 43 percent of the votes.

Gennimata also received the first runner up position during the first round of the presidential election, a week ago against eight candidates.

In July 2017, several social democrat parties including PASOK, Potami and DIMAR, agreed to form a new Unified Carrier. They still have to decide on the form and name of the new political party.

According to political analysts the new carrier will function as an “umbrella” at least until the next national election set for September 2019. Until then, PASOK, DIMAR and Potami will follow a common party line in Parliament.

Gennimata explains the new carrier will not be utilized as a stepping stone by either a conservative, or a leftist government and has favored an independent path for it.
