Bayern Munich demolished a sloppy Arsenal side by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday evening in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.

The German side's first goal came at the 11th minute from Dutch winger Arjen Robben, when he scored a brilliant left-footer into the top left corner.

Arsenal managed to win a penalty kick. Alexis Sanchez failed to convert it but he was able to volley the ball into the net for the equalizer.

In the second half, Bayern trashed Arsenal for an 11-minute stretch, scoring three goals -- one from striker Robert Lewandowski scored and two from Thiago Alcantara.

Substituted in at the 86th minute, Thomas Muller added insult to injury with a fifth and final goal at the 88th minute.

Bayern Munich had previously eliminated Arsenal in the Round of 16 in the Champions League in 2005, in 2013 and in 2014.

The German side has reached the quarterfinals of the tournament five years in a row.

Real Madrid beat Napoli 3-1

In the other match of the evening, defending champions Real Madrid cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Napoli in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Napoli took a quick lead at the 8th minute with a goal by Lorenzo Insigne. Real Madrid picked up the pace and equalized thanks to French striker Karim Benzema.

In the second half, Toni Kroos and Casemiro scored for Madrid.
