European Youth Olympic games start in Turkey

ANKARA 

The European Youth Olympic Festival began in the eastern province of Erzurum Monday with at least 675 athletes from 34 countries competing to take home the gold.

This is the first time Turkey has hosted the games, also known as EYOF-2017.

The games’ opening ceremonies were held Sunday night at Erzurum’s 25,000-person capacity Kazim Karabekir Stadium. Despite the chilly -14 Celsius (6.8 Fahrenheit) weather, many people showed up to see the event.

Today’s results

Women’s biathlon:

1. Anja Mandeljc (Slovenia), with 13.49.3, won the gold medal

2. Elena Kucheva (Russia), with 14.04.9, won the silver medal

3. Aleksandra Trofimova (Russia), with 14.17.3, won the bronze medal

Aysenur Duman (Turkey), with 15.48.4, came in 29th among 40 competitors.

Men’s biathlon:

1. Miska Poikkimaki (Finland), with 17.51.4, won the gold medal

2. Andrei Nekrasov (Russia), with 17.56.7, won the silver medal

3. Petteri Koivisto (Finland), with 18.25.9, won the bronze medal

Hamit Tarik Aydin (Turkey), with 19.24.4, came in 20th among 53 competitors.

Women’s figure skating:

1. Alina Zagitova (Russia), with 58.30 points, won the gold medal

2. Anastasia Gozhva (Ukraine), with 50.01 points, won the silver medal

3. Kristina Gromova (Estonia), with 43.99 points, won the bronze medal

Ekin Saygi (Turkey), with 30.61 points, came in 16th among 21 competitors.

Women’s snowboarding:

1. Elena Boltaeva (Russia), with 90 points, won the gold medal

2. Anastasia Kurochkina (Russia), with 72 points, won the silver medal

3. Aydan Karakulak (Turkey), with 54 points, won the bronze medal

Zehra Gozdener Gonekse (Turkey) came in 4th among 30 competitors.

Men’s snowboarding:

1. Dmitry Loginov (Russia), with 90 points, won the gold medal

2. Stepan Naumov (Russia), with 72 points, won the silver medal

3. Ziga Ozebek (Slovenia), with 54 points, won the bronze medal

Emre Boydak (Turkey) came in 4th.

Women’s alpine skiing:

1. Rinata Abdulkauimova (Russia), with 2.12.62, won the gold medal

2. Doriane Escane (France), with 2.13.83, won the silver medal

3. Nikola Bubakova (Czech Republic), with 2.13.95, won the bronze medal

Tayra Tunca (Turkey), with 2.31.31, came in 45th among 57 competitors.
