A court in Ankara has rejected the plea to release 18 suspects who allegedly attempted to take over the Special Forces Command in the capital’s Golbasi district during the July 15 defeated coup, a judicial source said Wednesday.

According to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, the 14th Ankara High Criminal Court decided to probe the incident by forming a three-member commission of experts.

The hearing in the case will continue on May 16, the source added.

The trial of the suspects began on Feb. 21.

According to the indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspects were also accused of murdering Sgt. Omer Halisdemir who became a symbol of the Turkish nation's resistance against the coup attempt after he shot pro-coup Brig. Gen. Semih Terzi at the entrance of the headquarters.

The office had demanded aggravated life imprisonment sentences for all coup plotters on charges of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order and the government.

Moreover, the prosecutor asked up to 15 years of imprisonment for each defendant on the charge of being members of an armed terrorist group.

According to the Turkish government, the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) orchestrated the defeated coup, which left 249 people martyred and some 2,200 others injured.
