A Turkish soldier who was injured in a terrorist organization PKK attack late January has died in hospital.

The Turkish General Staff issued a statement on Friday which read: "Our hero comrade, injured at the end of an armed attack by members of a terrorist [PKK] organization during ongoing operations in the Cizre district of Sirnak on Jan. 31, 2016 [...] became a martyr at 0930 local time [0730GMT]".

The army said the martyred soldier's treatment had been taking place at the GATA military hospital in the capital, Ankara.

In the statement, the General Staff offered condolences to the family and relatives of the fallen soldier.

The army also said it had full control of Cizre district, having killed 16 PKK terrorists on Thursday, adding that the security forces had recovered the bodies of 24 militants in eight buildings.

In the military operation, a total of 619 terrorists were "neutralized", the army said.

Earlier on Thursday, the counter-terror operation in Cizre – the southeastern Turkish town that has seen fighting raging between security forces and PKK terrorists – finished, Turkey’s interior minister said.

Efkan Ala said a curfew on the town, which lies near the Syrian border in Sirnak province, would remain as police and troops searched for booby traps.
