DIYARBAKIR

A Turkish soldier was martyred in an armed assault by PKK terrorists in the southeastern Diyarbakir province on Tuesday, according to security sources.

The terrorists opened fire from a vehicle on the soldier in Silvan district, said the source, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

An operation in the region was launched to find the terrorists, the source added.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015. Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of more than 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians.
