HAKKARİ

A soldier was martyred Monday during operations against the terrorist PKK in Turkey's southeastern Hakkari province, according to local sources.

The soldier was wounded while transferring material from a helicopter as part of counterterrorism operations in Hakkari's Duztepe area after PKK terrorists opened fire, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to media.

He later died at Hakkari State Hospital where he was brought for treatment.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU.

More than 1,200 victims, including security personnel and civilians, have lost their lives in PKK attacks since the terror group resumed its decades-long campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015.

More than 4,000 security personnel and over 2,000 civilians have also been injured.
