Turkey extends UNIFIL mandate

ANKARA

Turkish troops will remain in multinational task force in Lebanon for one more year under a Prime Ministry motion adopted on Friday.

The Turkish parliament on Friday decided to extend by one year its country's troops' participation in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This is Turkey's sixth extension of its mandate in Lebanon since the participation of Turkish troops was first approved in September 2006.
The mission of Turkish troops under UNIFIL was extended for one more year as of September 5, 2012.
The motion, which was adopted at Turkish Parliamentary General Assembly, says Turkey's presence in UNIFIL contributes to the policy of restoring peace and stability in the region.
Turkey sent troops to Lebanon under UNIFIL on September 5, 2006 for the first time.
