BAGHDAD

Twelve people were killed and another 42 injured late Wednesday in separate attacks in Iraq’s Baghdad, Anbar and Diyala provinces, according to local police sources.

In Baghdad, two pro-government tribesmen were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in southern Baghdad’s Al-Yousefiyah district, a police source told Anadolu Agency.

The same source said that five bombs had gone off in public areas across the capital, killing seven and injuring 22.

Unidentified assailants also killed two civilians after opening fire on a car in eastern Baghdad’s Jamila district, police said.

And in southern Baghdad’s Al-Madaen district, five people were injured when a car bomb exploded, according to the same police source.

In the western Anbar province, meanwhile, Abu Osama al-Delimi, a local public figure, told Anadolu Agency that 11 civilians -- including a child and several elderly people -- had been injured on Wednesday when a warplane from the U.S.-led coalition struck a mosque in the town of Ar-Rutbah.

Iraq’s eastern Diyala province, meanwhile, also saw violence on Wednesday, with one security officer killed and another injured by a car bomb, a local police source told Anadolu Agency.

The same source said that a bomb planted in the security officer’s vehicle had gone off in Diyala’s Karatepe district.

In recent years, bombings and shooting attacks -- which often target civilians -- have become a common occurrence in war-torn Iraq, especially capital Baghdad.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since June of last year, when the Daesh militant group overran the northern city of Mosul -- the country’s second largest city -- before going on to capture additional territories in both Iraq and neighboring Syria.
