ALEPPO, Syria

At least 50 civilians were killed late Thursday by a suspected U.S.-led coalition airstrike in northwestern Syria’s Aleppo province, according to a local source.

The airstrike took place in the province’s al-Ghandourah village, which is said to be under the control of Daesh.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fears of reprisal attacks, said the airstrike directly targeted a concentration of civilians in the main market of the village; Daesh militants were said to be nowhere near the attack site.

More than 15 bodies were lifted out of the rubble, while many others remained trapped under collapsed buildings.

The attack also left around 100 other people injured, who were then taken to hospitals in Daesh-controlled cities of al-Bab and Jarabulus, northeast of Aleppo city, according to the same source. The death toll is expected to increase further because of a lack of appropriate healthcare services in the region.

On July 19, at least 160 civilians were killed by U.S.-led coalition warplanes in northern Syria’s Daesh-held town of Manbij.

The airstrikes had allegedly targeted a group of civilians trying to flee clashes in the town’s Tukhar village.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests -- which erupted as part of the Arab Spring uprisings -- with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, more than a quarter of a million people have been killed and more than 10 million others displaced across the war-battered country, according to UN figures.
