IDLIB, Syria

At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured in a regime airstrike on Syria’s northwestern city of Idlib on Sunday, according to a pro-opposition civil defense official.

Regime warplanes struck a marketplace in Kafr Nabl town in Idlib, Amr Elwan told Anadolu Agency.

He said 23 civilians were injured in the strike, which has caused a massive damage in the area.

Syria has been locked in a devastating civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests -- which erupted as part of the "Arab Spring" uprisings -- with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people are believed to have been killed and millions more displaced by the conflict.
