A suicide bomb attack killed 11 people and wounded dozens of others in Iraqi capital Baghdad on Monday, local officials have said.

"Eleven people were killed and 35 injured when a bomb-laden vehicle exploded as Shia pilgrims crossed through an intersection in the Al-Sayyeda district," Ahmed Jebur, a local health official, said.

The pilgrims were in the area to attend a religious event, said Jebur, adding that the death toll was likely to rise further as many of the injured were in critical condition.

Monday's attack comes only one day after 36 people were killed and 90 others injured by two car bombs that went off in the city of Al-Samawah in Iraq’s southern Muthanna province.
