Turkey has sent more than 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to war-torn Yemen, the country's Foreign Ministry said on Friday in a statement.

The statement said the aid vessel containing 10,560 tons of humanitarian assistance reached in Yemen’s port city of Aden on Thursday and welcomed at the port with a ceremony in the presence of the relevant Yemeni authorities.

The vessel contains 50 tons of medicine and medical equipment for the treatment of cholera, as well as flour, food products, footwear, wheelchairs and 2 field hospitals, the statement added.

"Aiming at establishing peace and stability in Yemen and putting an end to the suffering of the Yemeni people, Turkey will continue to support efforts in finding a political solution to the crisis and make every effort to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of our Yemeni brothers and sisters," the statement said.

The aid was sent under the coordination of the Turkish Red Crescent and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority’s (AFAD) and with contributions of the Turkish Ministry of Health and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), it added.

Impoverished Yemen has remained in a state of civil war since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including Sanaa.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a massive air campaign aimed at reversing Houthi military gains and shoring up Yemen’s embattled government.
