Turks to erect world's first monument for labor immigrants

AMSTERDAM

"National Immigrant Labor Monument" which will be the world's first monument in its field is planned to be erected in Netherlands.

After six years of official procedures, the monument has been granted permission to be placed in May 2013 at Afrikaanderplein Square in Rotterdam where high number of foreigners reside.
Zeki Baran, the project planner and head of Dutch Federation of Social Democrats' Associations (DSDF), stated Friday that the 5-ton monument will be erected in respect to the hard working immigrants who contributed to economy of the countries where they were living.
Sculptor of the monument, Hand van Bentem, and Baran told AA that all preparation phases of the monument had been completed.
They added that the monument will not be only representing Turkish labor force and also all other immigrant laborers and it will be named "Monument of Netherlands National Immigrant Labor".
Baran highlighted that there were not any financial problems over the building of the monument and they received support from every section of the community.
Baran said that the idea of his project was welcomed by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Gunay as well as Dutch officials.
