LONDON

A female zoo-keeper died on Monday in a “freak accident” at a U.K. zoo after she was mauled by a tiger, police said.

An investigation has been launched into the death at the Hamerton Zoo Park, near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

The zoo-keeper was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither police nor the zoo released information on her identity.

"A tiger had entered an enclosure with a keeper. Sadly the female zoo keeper died at the scene," Cambridgeshire police said in a statement, adding that they did not treat her death as suspicious.

The zoo described the incident as a “freak accident".

“At no point during the incident did any animals escape their enclosures and at no point was public safety affected in any way,” the zoo said in a statement.
