WASHINGTON

Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday congratulated the Turkish people on their upcoming Republic Day.

Kerry used the occasion to again extend his condolences to the friends and relatives of the victims of the foiled Jul 15 coup attempt.

“As a long-time Ally, the United States remains steadfast in support of Turkey’s democratically elected government and institutions—institutions enshrined in Turkey’s constitution,” America’s top diplomat said in a statement.

“Especially in the wake of recent terrorist attacks inside Turkey, the United States is committed to standing with you as we strive together—in partnership with others in the world community—on behalf of justice, security, and the rule of law,” he added.

Turks will mark on Oct. 29 the foundation of their modern republic by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

"As you mark this special day, you have our very best wishes for a happy, prosperous, and safe year to come," Kerry said.
