China's electricity consumption increases 6.7% in 2023

- Renewable energy sources will provide 200 gigawatts out of 300 gigawatts of additional power to be commissioned this year

China's electricity consumption increased 6.7% year-on-year in 2023 to 9.22 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh), according to data from the China Electricity Council.

The statistics show that the country's installed electricity capacity last year increased by 13.9% to reach approximately 2.92 terawatts compared to 2022.

While the share of non-fossil resources in installed electricity capacity rose by over 50%, the share of thermal power plants fell below 40%.

In 2023, electricity consumption increased by 6.7% compared to the previous year, reaching 9.22 trillion kWh.

- Electricity installed capacity expected to exceed 3.2 terawatts in 2024

The country's 2024 electricity installed capacity is expected to increase by 12% compared to last year to reach 3.25 terawatts.

In this context, it is estimated that 300 gigawatts of additional power will be commissioned this year, out of which 200 gigawatts will consist of renewable energy sources.

In addition, the total capacity of solar and wind power plants is expected to reach 1.3 terawatts in 2024. This means that China will reach its renewable energy installed capacity target for 2030 within this year.

China's electricity consumption in 2024 is expected to increase by 6% compared to last year, reaching 9.8 trillion kWh.
