Türkiye's energy cooperation with UAE to open doors to new technologies

- $27-billion deal signed in August between Türkiye and United Arab Emirates also contributes to goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2053

Türkiye's recent renewable energy deals with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), among other countries, to secure energy source diversity and forge international cooperation should pave the way for new technology development in the sector.

As part of these efforts, the country has accelerated diplomatic talks with various countries, including the UAE, Venezuela, Azerbaijan, Iran and Libya.

The country is placing greater emphasis on renewable energy sources in alignment with its goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2053 and reducing dependency on foreign energy sources.

Türkiye and the UAE signed a total of 13 deals in various sectors worth $50.7 billion last August, with $27 billion of this investment package focused on the renewable energy sector.

Within the scope of the agreement, both countries plan to carry out joint projects in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and nuclear energy, including offshore wind and solar energy.

Last week, Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, met with the UAE Minister of Investment, Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, to discuss the implementation of these projects.

'Intensifying energy relations between the two countries will enable the acquisition and development of new technologies related to renewable energy,' Gokhan Ereli, a Gulf studies coordinator at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (ORSAM), told Anadolu.

He emphasized how important artificial intelligence and renewable energy technologies are to the UAE.

He maintained that Türkiye and the UAE working together would open doors to the acquisition and development of new technologies while boosting Türkiye’s standing in the regional and global energy markets to make it one of the pioneers in the renewable energy sector.

He further emphasized that Türkiye's participation in renewable energy projects with the UAE offers 'a holistic range of benefits that support the country's progress towards being more diverse, technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable.'
