Hydrogen delivery possible in future via Nord Stream 2

- Hydrogen is likely to replace natural gas in future with EU's decarbonization policy, says Eurogas Secretary General

The future delivery of hydrogen is possible through the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, Eurogas Secretary General James Watson said on Wednesday.

According to Sputnik News Agency, Watson said from discussions with Russia's Gazprom, the main shareholder of the Nord Stream 2 AG Company, there is a possibility of delivering 80% hydrogen capacity via the pipeline.

With the robust decarbonization agenda in the European Union, a region in which the two parallel pipeline Nord Stream 2 project reaches its destination in Germany, Watson said that hydrogen would likely replace natural gas in parts of the system.

Hydrogen is a zero-emission fuel when burned with oxygen. It can be used in fuel cells or internal combustion engines to power electric vehicles or electric devices. Its use has begun in commercial fuel cell vehicles such as passenger cars, and has been used for fuel cell buses for many years.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a 1,200 kilometer-long joint venture of Gazprom and five European companies with an aim to double the current annual 55 billion cubic meter capacity of the Nord Stream pipeline. Its completion is set for the end of this year.
