The American energy giant Chevron and the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to share best practices and expertise for the reduction of methane emissions, the company announced on Tuesday.
Egypt is prioritizing the reduction of methane emissions from its oil and gas sector. To this end, the Egyptian petroleum and mineral resources ministry pledged to collaborate with companies such as Chevron 'to further drive emissions reduction and reduce the carbon footprint of our hydrocarbon resources.'
The MoU includes methane and decarbonization study tours and workshops for ministry employees at Chevron facilities in the US and other locations to build awareness of methane control technologies, measurement practices and projects to effectively reduce carbon emissions.
'Due to its significant global warming potential, reducing methane emissions is key to supporting positive climate action,' said Tarek El Molla, Egypt's petroleum and mineral resources minister.
Chevron aims to be a global leader in methane emissions performance by taking action accordingly. The company's upstream methane intensity has been reduced by 50% since 2016.
Both parties have been working together on an agreement related to developing and strengthening best practices for methane abatement since last year, Chevron said.
