EU greenhouse gas emissions down in first quarter

- Bulgaria, Estonia and Slovenia marks the highest decrease

Greenhouse gas emissions in European Union (EU) countries decreased by 2.9% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, on Wednesday.

Emissions fell from 969 million tons to 941 million tons.

In the first quarter, households at 24%, manufacturing at 20%, power and gas at 19%, agriculture at 13%, and transportation and storage at 10% were the industries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions.

Data showed a decrease in first quarter emissions relative to the same period last year in five out of nine economic sectors, with the biggest decrease in electricity and gas supply at 12.3%.

Transportation and storage also had a substantial increase of 7.2%.

The countries with the highest decrease in carbon emissions were Bulgaria with 15.2%, Estonia with 14.7% and Slovenia with 9.6%.

On the other hand, the countries with the most increases in carbon emissions were Ireland with 9.1%, Latvia with 7.5%, Slovakia with 1.9%, Denmark with 1.7%, Sweden with 1.6% and Finland with 0.3%.
