China submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions before the end of this current decade on Thursday ahead of 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference also known as COP26, according to the United Nations Climate Change interim NDC Registry on Thursday.
The country is world's top emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
Previously Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China aims to reduce peak emissions of carbon dioxide 'before 2030' and to reach 'carbon neutrality' before 2060.
Also the country aims to lower CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by over 65% from the 2005 level, increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25%.
China also targets to increase the forest stock volume by 6 billion cubic meters from the 2005 level, and bring its total installed capacity of wind and solar power to over 1.2 billion kilowatts by 2030.
The plan comes days before the COP26 UN climate summit and follows earlier commitments by China this year to strictly control domestic coal-fired power generation and stop building coal-fired power plants abroad.
