Spain's airport operator Aena approved a renewable energy plan to cut carbon emissions and save on its energy bills by producing electricity via solar panels by 2026, according to Spanish Newspaper El Pais on Wednesday.
According to the news report, the company will invest €250 million to install solar panels in 20 out of its 46 airports in Spain.
The installation will help the airports to reduce its carbon emissions by 40 percent, equivalent to 167,000 tons, by 2025.
'Aena currently spends €75 million a year on its energy bills,' the report stated.
In addition, the move will ensure that Madrid and Barcelona’s airports, which account for half of Aena’s emissions, are carbon neutral by 2030.
'The company also plans to replace all of its passenger vehicles with non-polluting ones by 2025 and to install 2,300 charging stations for electric vehicles in its airport parking lots,' El Pais stated.
