China's coal imports up 92.6% in May

- China's energy production also on rise in first five months of year

The production and import of energy resources in China continued to rise in May, with coal imports increasing by 92.6% year over year to 39.6 million tons, data released by China's National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday showed.

On a yearly basis, China's energy imports were on the rise, with natural gas imports increasing 17.3% to 14.6 billion cubic meters and crude oil imports growing 12.3% to 51.4 million tons.

Coal production correspondingly increased in May by 4.2% to 390 million tons compared to May 2022, while crude oil production rose by 2.7% to 18.07 million tons. Natural gas production also rose by 7.2% to 19 billion cubic meters compared to May 2022.

According to the bureau's data, coal imports from January to May were recorded at 180 million tons, marking an 89.6% increase, while crude oil imports saw an increase of 6.2% to 230.2 million tons, and natural gas rose by 3.3% to 63.8 billion cubic meters.
