The energy sector created 2.5 million jobs globally last year, driven by the growth of clean technology manufacturing, according to the latest report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday.
The third edition of the World Energy Employment report analyzes global energy job trends by region and technology, the Paris-based energy watchdog said in a statement.
According to the report, the number of energy jobs globally rose by 3.8% last year, reaching 68 million. By comparison, job growth economy-wide was 2.2%.
The report highlights a persistent shortage of skilled workers.
'The largest increase was for jobs in the clean energy sector, which rose by 1.5 million in 2023 and contributed as much as 10% of economy-wide job growth in the leading markets for clean energy technologies,' IEA added.
Commenting on the report Laura Cozzi, the IEA's director of sustainability, technology and outlooks, said that the global energy sector has been a major job creator in recent years.
“As the energy system continues to transform and grow, rising demand for skilled energy workers is a given,' Cozzi added.
'However, this report shows that greater investment in skills and training is critical,' she added.
