The gas-in procedure for the second string of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline has started on Dec. 17, the project company, Nord Stream 2 AG, announced on Friday.
Pre-commissioning activities on the second string were completed successfully to assure pipeline integrity. Similar to the first string, gas will be filled into the second string to build the required inventory and pressure.
The company said it would announce any further technical steps required before commissioning.
'The pipeline is built and independently certified according to applicable technical and industry standards to ensure reliable and safe operations,' the company said.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline that runs under the Baltic Sea will transport natural gas over more than 1,230 kilometers from the world’s largest gas reserves in Russia via the most efficient route to consumers in Europe.
The Nord Stream 2 will mainly follow the route and technical concept of the successful Nord Stream pipeline.
The new pipeline will have the capacity to transport 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, enough to supply 26 million European households.
