UK's Centrica Energy and Spain's Repsol today signed an liquified natural gas (LNG) deal for 1 million tonnes on Wednesday, that will improve the UK's energy security in the coming years.
Under the deal, Centrica will purchase 1 million tonnes of LNG shipments between 2025 and 2027.
The cargoes are expected to be delivered to the Grain LNG import terminal in Kent, located in South East England.
The deal is the latest in Centrica's move to strengthen the country's energy security. It follows a 15 year, $8 billion deal with Delfin Midstream in July 2023 and a 3 year supply agreement with Equinor that will heat 4.5 million UK homes through to 2024.
Natural gas is an essential transition fuel on the road to reaching net zero, Chris O'Shea, Centrica group chief executive said and added, 'We stand ready to invest several billion pounds in additional projects, creating thousands of new UK jobs, with the right regulatory framework.'
'Reliable and affordable energy supplies are crucial to maintaining economic and social wellbeing, and we are delighted that our partnership with Centrica contributes to this end,' said Laura Rejon, Repsol LNG and natural gas head of trading division.
