U.K. Climate Investments, a joint venture between the U.K. government and the Green Investment Group, announced £14 million of financial backing for 254 megawatts of clean energy projects in South Africa on Monday.
Financing will be used to develop the Kruisvallei Hydro project in the Free State province (4 megawatts), Kangnas Wind Farm in the Northern Cape province (140 megawatts) and the Perdekraal East Wind Farm in the Western Cape province (110 megawatts).
Completion of the projects is expected by the end of 2020 to provide enough clean electricity to power nearly 200,000 homes each year.
During their lifetime, they will help avoid approximately 844,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum.
In addition to promoting the growth of renewable energy in the country, the projects will contribute to rural development by employing and training at least 40% of construction, operations and maintenance staff from local communities.
