Germany will build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals as well as increase its storage facilities to combat dependence on Russian gas amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday during a special session of the Bundestag.
The country meets about 55% of its gas demands from Russia.
Scholz said, Germany will create strategic gas reserves, and will build two LNG terminals as soon as possible.
The LNG terminals will be located in Brunsbuettel and Wilhelmshaven, both in the northern coast of the country.
Additionally, the country plans to add 2 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas to its reserves, Scholz said, from the current 24 bcm in storage.
Germany, where there are no LNG terminals currently in operation, receives LNG from the US and Qatar via terminals in Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
