Estonia’s biggest port authority in Tallinn signed contracts on Tuesday for the construction of four new car-passenger ferry boats whose engines can run on liquefied natural gas.
The contracts were signed with Poland’s Remontowa Shipbuilding and Turkey’s Sefine Shipyard shipbuilding facilities, according to the Port of Tallinn’s press release.
New ferry boats will be constructed in Gdansk in the northern city of Poland and in the northwestern city of Yalova in Turkey, and Norwegian company LMG Marin will design the new ferry boats.
'The concluded contracts provide assurance to the Estonian people that high-quality connections on the lines between the mainland and the islands, by the new ferries conforming to contemporary requirements, will be guaranteed in autumn 2016,' said Remo Holsmer, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Port of Tallinn.
The main engines of the ships will be designed to be converted to engines running on liquefied natural gas.
