The EU countries on Monday agreed to continue reducing their natural gas consumption until March 31 next year by at least 15% compared to their average gas consumption in the period from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2022.
In a statement, the Council announced that member states agreed to continue coordinated demand-reduction measures for natural gas following a meeting among energy ministers in Brussels.
The gas demand reduction regulation was adopted as an emergency instrument in 2022, in response to the energy crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.
To ensure continuity of supply security and contain price volatility, the Council agreed last year to extend the measure through March 2024.
