Gas production from the Ghazeer gas field in Oman has begun four months ahead of schedule, BP, the operator of the field, announced on Monday.
According to the company's statement, Ghazeer, which was initially planned to start production in 2021, is the second phase of development of Oman's block 61.
The first phase of development from Block 61 - in the Khazzan gas field came on stream three years ago, in September 2017.
Total production capacity from Block 61, comprising both Khazzan and Ghazeer, is expected to rise to 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas a day while associated condensate production will increase to 65,000 barrels per day.
'With an estimated 10.5 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas resources, the block has the capacity to deliver approximately 35% of Oman’s total gas demand,' according to BP.
BP, with a 60% participating interest, operates Block 61, which is one of the Middle East’s largest tight gas accumulations. Makarim Gas Development Ltd holds a 30% stake, while PC Oman Ventures Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas holds the remaining 10%.
Gas from Block 61 is distributed for domestic consumption via Oman's national gas grid, while also boosting the availability of feedstock supply for Oman LNG.
