Turkish Petroleum (TP) appointed Wood, the global consulting and engineering company, as the integrated project management partner for the Sakarya gas field development project offshore Turkey in the Black Sea, Wood announced on Thursday.
As Turkey’s largest gas reserve, the Sakarya field has a confirmed capacity of 405 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas first discovered last year.
A subsequent second discovery of 135 bcm was made bringing the cumulative gas find to 540 bcm.
Last week, a daily gas flow of 650,000 cubic meters was achieved in the reservoir-1 test of the Turkali-2 well, onshore in Zonguldak, a Turkish port city in the Black Sea.
On completion of the first phase in 2023, 10 million cubic meters per day of gas will be delivered to the Turkish grid to help build energy resilience across the country.
The company said the discovery could alleviate much of Turkey’s domestic gas import dependence, most of which comes from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran via pipelines, along with liquefied natural gas from several countries, including Nigeria, Algeria and the US.
A multidisciplinary Wood team will carry out the integrated project management and engineering verification for the first Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) phase of the project, which covers the subsea production system, gas transport pipeline and umbilical, and onshore processing facility in Filyos in Zonguldak, Wood said.
“The Sakarya Gas Field will make a significant contribution to the development and growth of the Turkish energy industry and the wider economy,” Andy Hemingway, president of Energy, Innovation & Optimization at Wood, was quoted as saying in the statement.
“With decades of experience, Wood is uniquely positioned to deliver on this new contract, and we are delighted to be continuing our longstanding working relationship with TP [Turkish Petroleum] on this milestone project,” he added.
Wood’s subsea team has already supported TP throughout the project’s pre-FEED and FEED phase during the past year, drawing on its wide range of expertise and experience in onshore and offshore development.
