German wind turbine manufacturer Senvion signed a conditional contract with Madrid-based energy companies GPG and Grupo Ibereolica Renovables for the supply of turbines with a total capacity of 204.7 megawatts (MW) in Chile's Atacama region, the company announced Monday.
The contract includes the supply of Senvion's newest turbine in the 2.XM platform for its largest project in the country, the Cabo Leones II project, along with a long-term full scope service agreement, according to the statement.
The installation of 89 'Senvion 2.3M130' turbines in the Huasco province in northern Chile will start in the first quarter of 2020 and is planned for completion before the end of the year.
'With the launch of the 2.3M130 turbine, Senvion provides a tailored technology solution for low wind sites. Being the newest turbine in the 2.XM platform, it has been optimized to suit the project's challenging wind conditions,' the statement read.
Manav Sharma, acting chief executive officer and chief financial officer at Senvion, said this was their first contract with GPG and Grupo Ibereolica Renovables.
'The order win highlights the strength of our new product 2.3M130 and its ability to provide a competitive levelized cost of efficiency for the benefit of our clients. We are confident that this turbine will position us strongly in 2MW class markets worldwide, especially in India,' Sharma said.
He added the Cabo Leones II project further solidified Senvion's market position in Chile and in South America.
Grupo Ibereolica Renovables is an independent group focused on the renewable energy sector, with over 400 MW under operation in Spain and Chile, 300 MW assets under construction and an additional 2.5 gigawatts (GW) under development in wind, solar and hydro projects in Spain, Chile, Peru and Brazil.
Global Power Generation (GPG) was set by Naturgy, formerly Gas Natural Fenosa, and specializes in generating electrical energy, in which the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) has a 25 percent stake.
The company has a generation capacity of over 3.4 GW, and manages close to 4.3 GW. And at the time of writing, the company has been awarded 330 MW in projects.
