Poland's first nuclear power plant to cost $20 billion

- US company Westinghouse will build country's first nuclear power plant, PM says

US company Westinghouse will build Poland's first nuclear power plant at a cost of approximately $20 billion, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki revealed on Wednesday.

Morawiecki explained the procedure to journalists, saying that Warsaw has been working hard for nearly 5 years in preparation for the decision to invest in nuclear energy.

Under the Polish government's energy strategy, the country will build six nuclear power units with a total capacity of between 6 and 9 gigawatts (GW).

The first plant will be located in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino coastal region in the north of the country.

The first reactor will start operating in 2033 and generate 1-1.6 GW of power. Subsequent reactors will be built every two years.

He confirmed that two more nuclear power plants will be built, relaying “not only on proven technologies but also on proven partners.”

An agreement with South Korea has been made for the second plant and plans are afoot for the third plant, he confirmed.
