World's 1st floating nuke plant starts commercial ops.

- Akademik Lomonosov becomes the 11th nuclear power plant in Russia and the northernmost one in the world

The world's first floating nuclear power plant, Akademik Lomonosov, has been fully commissioned, Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom announced on Friday.

All necessary permissions were granted to start operations at the floating plant in the Chukotka region of eastern Russia, the company's statement disclosed.

Akademik Lomonosov has officially become the 11th nuclear power plant in Russia and the northernmost one in the world, the statement read.

The floating plant is equipped with two reactors capable of producing up to 70 megawatts of electric power.

Akademik Lomonosov started providing electricity to the isolated grid of the Chaun-Bilibino energy center of Chukotka on Dec19. It has already generated over 47.3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity since being connected to the grid. Currently, it covers 20% of the Chaun-Bilibino energy center's demand.

The floating plant will become the main energy source for Chukotka following the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant shutdown.
